Saturday, September 21 we were a part of Ellington Farm Day. We opened our doors to the public and invited everyone in. We were pleased with the turnout from 10:00 – 3:00. The favorite activity for our guests was to feed the pigs. Young and old enjoyed this opportunity. You can hold an apple to them, and they will take a bite out of it, just like we do. It’s fun!
Our pigs are Berkshires and we are very pleased with their meat. We have repeat customers coming back, so we think our customers are enjoying the pork as much as we are. We get our piglets at 15 – 20 pounds from someone right here in Ellington. The Iowa turned Connecticut farmer has enjoyed his hobby of farrowing pigs for many years. We are fortunate to be his customer. We have a great relationship with him, especially since our daughter married his son. We are keeping the farming right in the family. (We also share 2 adorable granddaughters!)
We raise the pigs all summer and butcher in October. The pigs will weigh in between 175 – 225 lbs. It’s amazing to watch them gain weight from 15 lbs to 200 lbs in 6 short months!
The rest of our Farm Day included watching the cows, learning about the bedded pack barn, and Touch A Tractor, which is popular with the little ones. Maybe you will be able to come next year! We’d love to have you!
