Green Pastures

Green Pastures

Enjoying the cool spring weather, the cows are finally released on the lush green pastures. Sunset Valley Farms produced the highest quality, healthful grass fed beef in the region. Superior quality meat starts with breeding.  As you can see our steers range in size and color. We stagger the purchases of our steers so we can stagger our butchering time frames. We do not want to keep our cows for extensive periods of time as it reduces the quality of our meat. As for the different breeds we raise a mixture of different breeds. Our steers our mainly angus crossed with white face or charolais. We find the mixture keeps a good level of leanness to our beef without the taste of grass fed animals overpowering the taste of the beef.

Spring on the Farm

Spring on the Farm

Cows are enjoying the spring sunshine as they pick at the winter grasses. For the next couple weeks, our cows are penned with hay bales and prevented from roaming the pastures due to over seeding our fields in preparation for summer. The hay is from last years harvest and has been the steers food for the winter. Over seeding our fields is a necessity as our farm is still growing and we are trying to have the most luscious green fields with healthy grass for our animals. Many hours are spent during the summer mowing the weeds and letting the grass grow to provide the most nutrient rich area for our cows to graze as the grass is their sole food source.
